Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

For proper disposal of a smoke alarm or detector, please check the label on the device or research the type of alarm/detector you have. Not all smoke alarms/detectors have radioactive materials. If your device does not contain radioactive materials per the product description, you can remove the battery and dispose of the alarm/detector in the trash.

If your product does contain radioactive materials, Orange County residents can bring it to any of our four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers for free recycling.  Some manufacturers also offer a mail-back program. You may also check this website at for more recycling information, including a helpful Frequently Asked Question sheet. Please note that some resources may require a fee for service.

If uncertain, you may contact our office at 714-834-4000 to speak to a materials regulation specialist.
