Landfill
space is filling up faster than anticipated and open
land to develop new landfills is dwindling statewide.
The state estimates that one-third of all landfill material
is greenwaste (i.e., yard waste, grass clippings, bush
trimmings, tree materials).
A current state law mandates a reduction of landfilled
waste by 50% by the end of 2000. It is vital that Greenwaste
production and disposal be reduced, and the materials
be reused and recycled to help Orange County cities
and the County meet this state law.
Additionally, there are state mandates that require
public agencies to meet water and waste efficiency levels.
The intent of the laws is to extend essential resources
so that:
• Economic expansion can continue
• Resources the public needs and demands will
be available
• And the environment is protected for the benefit
of all California residents.
