How Do I Handle And Transport Household Hazardous Waste?
Department of Transportation regulations allow you to carry a maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds in one trip. But you can make as many trips as you need.

State regulations require you to remain in your car when delivering hazardous waste. Materials should be in original container, if not please label container as to contents.

Containers larger than 5 gallons will not be accepted.

Containers must be sturdy, non-leaking, and protected from damage.

Containers must have lids.

Containers used to transport used motor oil are not normally returned. If you wish to have your used oil container returned, advise the attendant ahead of time. No other containers may be returned to you.

DO NOT mix different hazardous wastes together. (Exception: you may combine similar paints – oil based with oil based; latex with latex; etc. Do NOT mix oil and latex paint together.)

If you have a very small amount of paint left in the can, remove the lid and let it dry out completely. Then it is safe to throw in your trash.
