Falcons Help Out at the Landfill

News ImageOC Waste & Recycling operates three landfills in Orange County. Many environmental stewardship and protection programs are part of the landfill’s operations. One of the most interesting and unusual is the bird abatement program, which uses falcons to shoo away pesky seagulls that otherwise could carry trash off the landfill and onto beaches or neighborhoods. Sometimes the falcons don’t even have to be flying; the gulls spot them and simply stay away! Since OC’s landfills started the bird abatement program, the number of gulls seen daily has been reduced from thousands to a maximum of fewer than 30 per day.

County Awards $2.4 million in Grant Funds to Support Organics Recycling and Waste Reduction

(March 20, 2018)—The Orange County Board of Supervisors has voted to award a total of $2.4 million to six programs that target state recycling and waste reduction mandates. The County’s Regional Recycling and Waste Reduction Program requires recipients to sustain their grant-funded projects for a minimum of five years and fully sustain them for the final two years.

Waste Management Commission Elects 2018 Leaders

News ImageAt its December 2017 meeting, the Orange County Waste Management Commission elected Commissioner Rob Johnson to serve as Chairman for 2018. He was appointed to the Commission in 2015 and served as Vice Chair in 2017. Chairman Johnson was elected to serve the cities of the Second Supervisorial District in 2015 by the City Selection Committee. He also serves as Council Member for the City of Cypress.

The Commission also elected Commissioner Donald R. Froelich Vice Chair for 2018.He was appointed to the Commission in 2011 and has served as Chairman of the Renewable Technologies and Ad hoc Educational Outreach Committees.

SMALL CHANGES MAKE BIG RECYCLING IMPACT DURING SUMMER ACTIVITIES

This week, 76 percent of Americans broke out the grills, Frisbees and family recipes in celebration of the July Fourth holiday. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, 155 million hot dogs are consumed annually on this day alone, which is enough to stretch from Los Angeles to Washington, DC more than five times. Although Independence Day and summer days are synonymous with lots of food, sun and fun, outdoor gatherings and the season itself are rife with important recycling opportunities.

The event was one of nine supported by the department this April and May alone, aimed at reaching OC residents to educate about eco-friendly recycling habits and waste management services provided by the County. Through these efforts, OCWR reached more than 6,000 residents, supported two campaigns and raised $5,000 for United Way.

National Battery Day is a little-known, unofficial holiday that is observed on February 18, the birthday of Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist and inventor of the electric battery in 1745. New Notification System

On Sunday night, August 28, 2016, OC Waste & Recycling received reports of a loud noise coming from the Prima Deshecha Landfill in San Juan Capistrano. Thanks to a new notification system recently put in place, several landfill staff members received the email from a nearby resident informing them of a loud popping noise that appeared to be coming from the landfill.

10-12 million-year-old Sperm Whale fossils discovered at County landfill

  • The fossil find is considered rare and significant.

SANTA ANA, Calif. – How do ancient sperm whale fossils wind up at an elevation of 1,272 feet?

That’s what paleontologists explained at a media briefing today to unveil the recent fossil find of more than 20 sizable pieces, including teeth weighing at least one pound, a flipper bone and portions of jaw and skull bones from a sperm whale dating back 10-12 million years.

Bowerman Power Renewable Energy Project Powers On to Bring New Green Energy to Orange County

IRVINE, Calif. (Mar. 29, 2016) -— Orange County 3rd District Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined today with government, business and project development officials for a ribbon-cutting to ceremonially open the Bowerman Power Project renewable energy facility.

The landfill gas-to-electricity plant at the Frank R. Bowerman landfill east of Irvine will power thousands of local homes and businesses in Anaheim, generate millions of dollars in royalties for the county government system, and provide other environmental and economic benefits.

Mr. Tettemer, a long-time Orange County resident, was nominated to serve on the Commission by Fifth District Supervisor and Board Vice Chairman, Lisa Bartlett. Orange County Landfills Are Closed Saturday, July 4th for Independence Day Holiday

Landfills are closed for five holidays each year. The next holiday closure is Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2015

All County of Orange landfills are open Monday through Saturday.

They are closed five major holidays each year: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Orange County Board of Supervisors Approves High-Tech Renewable Energy Project at Local Landfill

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Orange County Board of Supervisors today gave a green light to an academic-government-business partnership that will convert landfill gas into clean energy at the closed Santiago Canyon Landfill. In addition to the County’s closed landfill, the partnership includes UC Irvine’s Advanced Power & Energy Program (APEP) and Ener-Core, an Irvine-based company.

“Creating clean energy power from landfill gas is a smart investment that helps the environment and advances science and engineering,” said Board Chairman Todd Spitzer, who has championed renewable energy projects, including the new power plant being built at the County’s Frank R. Bowerman Landfill east of Irvine. “Advancing important technology that helps the environment and potentially generates revenue is the best way for Orange County to do business as a leader in clean energy projects.”
